Whenever someone gets me a house plant, I see it's beauty and decide that this time I will be dedicated to keep it alive. For a week or two I follow the instructions, giving it proper water and light but then out of nowhere I realize I lost track of time. I notice weeks have gone by without paying any care to it and it's started to wither. I typically will water my plants every few weeks or months even, hoping that my little effort will somehow be enough to sustain them, but I am never caring enough to consistently work on keeping them alive. Leaf by leaf it slowly dies off and becomes empty, worthless, wasted space on a shelf and I'll eventually discard it all together.
Too often our walk with Christ looks very similar, we get on fire for God and see the beautiful work He's done in us... We are motivated within the high emotions to nourish our soul and it lasts for a time, then we get distracted. Little by little we lose our beauty God filled us with as we start to spread out the times we seek Him. We see ourselves slowly withering but we think our occasional prayer, gift, or bible reading will somehow sustain us and keep us alive spiritually.
The reality is that in order to be the wonderful creation God has intended for us, we must frequently be pouring into our souls as God has instructed us to do. Don't let so much time go by that God no longer can find a root with life in it and decides that your soul is wasted space in His kingdom. Though you can always come back to Him, He wants us to be either all in or all out.
